The Story Behind The Run

We always have self-doubt if you are a high achiever because when we try to go to the next level and there is thought we are not good enough, but that’s okay because that means we are hungry and we are committed to elevating ourselves..

Hakone ekiden 2020

When I first visited Lake Ashi in Hakone several years ago, I came across the Hakone Ekiden sculpture. As an avid leisure runner myself, I got curious when I saw the details on it. Hakone ekiden has such a long history in Japan. Ekiden brings togetherness and strong team spirit.
Usually watching clips online and reading about post race details of the two days event, finally today I had the opportunity to watch the runners live – right in front of my eyes. At about 11.30am, we went to a spot near Shibakoen after studying the race route. There were already few supporters waiting while listening to the race commentary via radio. At about 12pm, the task force and volunteers arrived and started the preparations as well as distributing Hakone Ekiden flags to supporters. The roads were soon packed with supporters of all ages. The atmosphere was lively! Japan truly has a wonderful running culture.

Hakone Ekiden 2020 is well organized. The staff, task force and volunteers worked together to ensure safety of runners and the public (ie crossing the streets during the race during gaps of the runners).

The condition for today’s race was perfect. Clear blue sky, sunny and comfortable weather. We could view the race comfortably. The runners’ passion and fighting spirit could be felt as they passed us! They were too fast for our iPhone cameras but luckily we managed to capture some good photos of this great race! Congratulations to all the runners of Hakone Ekiden 2020!
